1.0 Getting Started

• 1.1 How do I get started playing YVD?

  To get started, you need to download the software. You can also get the ZIP version if you are using something other than Windows or the installer doesn't work. You can then read the manual to get familiar with how to play.

• 1.2 Where can I find the YVD Manual?

  First of all, check your YVD Directory (the place where you installed YVD) which is usually in "Program Files" or "My Documents".
  If you fail to see the User Manual in your YVD Directory, you can download it directly.

• 1.3 I read the manual. How do I find a duel?

  You can go to our chat page and read the rules, then click the link at the top. There's instructions on how to register your nick and other things; be sure to read it! Then you can ask for a duel in the main channel.

2.0 Installing YVD

• 2.1 I am using Windows XP or an older computer. How do I install YVD?

  We offer two different methods of installation, using either a pre-made installer (MSI file) or a compressed folder (ZIP file). You can find both on our Downloads page. The MSI installer is the easiest to use, and we highly suggest you install YVD using that, but if it does not work for you or you prefer to have YVD without running the installer, download the ZIP file. You will likely need a program such as WinRar, WinZip, or 7Zip to extract the files from the ZIP file.

• 2.2 I am using Windows Vista or Windows 7. How do I install YVD?

  Windows Vista and Windows 7 can have various errors if YVD is installed in the default directory, due to their new security permissions on the Program Files folder. We highly suggest changing the default directory to your Documents folder to prevent any permissions issues you may encounter.

• 2.3 I am using MAC or Linux. How do I install YVD?

  YVD is not designed to function on MAC or Linux, but some users have found workarounds using emulators. Visit this topic for information on that.

3.0 Updating YVD

• 3.1 XeroCreative announced that a new version of YVD was released! How do I update to the latest version?

  First, be sure to backup your decks! Create a folder in your Documents section and copy all of your decks to there. This will prevent you from accidentally losing your time-consuming creations! You can then download the latest version of YVD from our Downloads page. Afterward, simply follow the instructions in Section 2.0 above to install it. It should overwrite the existing installation of YVD and update to the latest version.

• 3.2 XeroCreative announced an update to YVD's sets. What does this mean, and how do I update it on my end?

  A set update means that more cards were released for the Yugioh TCG and we have updated the game's database to reflect that. To update your sets, you can click the Update Sets button on the top left corner of the YVD screen, or you can manually download the new set file from our Downloads page. If you are manually downloading it, be sure to save it in your YVD directory and replace the existing set file. For Windows Vista/7, be sure to delete the old set file before saving the new one in your YVD directory.

• 3.3 I don't see any card images in YVD, or XeroCreative just announced an update to the images. How do I install them?

  Images are an easy fix. Simply download this file and extract ALL the folders to: C:\Program Files\XeroCreative\YVD\Images . Be sure to allow the copy if you're using Vista or 7. Note that images may not exist yet for the very latest sets; be sure to check the news frequently as new images are announced as they are released. Adamon also created this very nice tutorial (with pictures!) for installing images.

• 3.4 XeroCreative announced an update to the banlist! How do I update that?

  The banlist is actually stored on a server on our side, so no action is needed on your part for that to change. It will update automatically for you. If this doesn't automatically update for you, please refer to Section 6.4.

4.0 Types of Duels

• 4.1 What is a Server Duel, and how do I do it?

  Server Dueling is a new feature that was added in YVD version 9.0. It allows users to connect to a server and duel, adding some much-needed security to dueling and preventing users from having to go through all of the trouble of configuring routers and firewalls to allow IP dueling (explained in the next subsection). Overall, it's the easiest and most secure method of dueling using YVD.
  Here is a Server Duel tutorial, showing you how to use it and connect to your opponent.

• 4.2 What is an IP Duel, and how do I do it?

  IP Dueling is the old-fashioned method of connecting to use for YVD. It's more complex to use, but is an excellent alternative when Server Dueling is down or not working for you. IP Duels require that two users connect to each other using IP Addresses instead of the names that you use with Server Dueling. This allows the users to connect directly to each other without the server acting as a middleman. This does, however, require that one person act as the host and the other act as the client. The host must have the necessary ports forwarded for YVD in order for the client to be able to connect to him/her. Port forwarding and other configurations are explained in sections 4.2.1 and 4.2.2.
  Here is an IP Duel tutorial, showing you how to use it and connect to your opponent.

  • 4.2.1 How do I forward the ports required to host an IP Duel?

    For those that know what they're doing, you need to forward ports 7237-7240 TCP and UDP to your computer in order to be able to host an IP duel. Note that these would be forwards, not triggers. For those that don't, we have two excellent guides that can help. The first one is something that our friends over at PortForward.com has decided to help us out with. The second is a very detailed guide explaining anything you could want to know about port forwarding for YVD by Master O.

  • 4.2.2 I can't get the ports forwarded for some reason. Are there any alternatives?

    Years ago, our users found a work-around that allowed them to connect to one another without the port forwarding. The port forwarding is still the suggested method, but this alternative method works as well. You can download and install Hamachi, using it to connect to one another. Please not that both users must be using Hamachi, or it won't work as a viable connection method. This guide was created by Zero34 to walk users through setting up and using Hamachi for an IP Duel.

• 4.3 Can I connect to someone on the same network as me?

  The easiest way to do this is use the Server Duel function, but in case that is temporarily down, there is an alternate method. You can use Internal IP addresses to connect to each other while on the same network.
  Start Menu > All Programs > Accessories > Command Prompt > When the window loads type "ipconfig" and press enter. It should tell you there what your Internal IP is.

5.0 OCG and CCG

• 5.1 What is OCG?

  OCG stands for "Original Card Game," which is Yugioh as it is played in Japan. Japan always gets cards before the rest of the world, so it's one way of playing with new cards early. They also have some cards that are strictly OCG-exclusive, and there are also some that are strictly TCG-exclusive (TCG is the Trading Card Game as it is currently in the United States). This combined with Japan's separate banlist makes it a very different Yugioh environment to play in.

  • 5.1.1 OCG sounds great! How do I play?

    Head over to Kaikan's OCG thread to download the most recent OCG set. Kaikan also provides instructions on how to run YVD in OCG mode, so that thread should sufficiently get you up and running.

• 5.2 What is CCG?

  CCG stands for "Custom Card Game," which is created by our more creative users that like to add their own cards into the game.

  • 5.2.1 How do I play the CCG?

    Each CCG group has a different way to play with their cards. Essentially, the CCG group in question will have created their own set file with their custom cards in it. You will need to replace your set file with this one in order to use their cards. They will also have special banlists, which cannot be added into YVD. You will have to change your banlist in YVD to the "No List" option and show some restraint to play the various CCGs.

6.0 Troubleshooting YVD

• 6.1 I'm having issues with YVD. What are my first steps toward troubleshooting them?

  First thing's first! Read through this topic! There are many of the common issues with YVD listed here with instructions on how to resolve them. If this topic does not answer your question, then create a new topic in this forum with as much detail as possible (including screenshots, if you can). BE SURE TO SEARCH FIRST!

• 6.2 I'm getting a runtime error! What do I do?

  If you get a runtime error, chances are the set is corrupted somehow, either during the download or Vista/7's protections.
  The following runtime errors are a result of a corrupt set file:
  Runtime Error: 6 (Overflow)
  Runtime Error: 9 (subscript out of range)
  Runtime Error: Automation Error
  
  This can happen if you use Vista/7 and not run YVD under administrator mode when updating sets, a failed download, or a corrupted file on XC itself. Follow these steps to fix this:
  
  1) Download the latest set.
  2) If you are using Windows Vista or later, you will have to browse to the following directory: C:\Users\[yourname]\AppData\Roaming\Program Files\XeroCreative\YVD - After you do this, extract yvd.set to this directory. Note that on some PCs, you may have to go to AppData\Local instead of Roaming.
  If you are using XP, you can go to C:\Program Files\XeroCreative\YVD and drop the set file there. You can do this with Vista, but sometimes it will refuse to work and YVD may not start anyway.
  3) Try to start YVD. It should start, and then you should be able to update successfully. [b]If it still fails,[/b] drop yvd.set into the program files folder (XP's directions) by "allowing" the move, then right-click the program --> Run as Administrator. You should be able to update your set then.

• 6.3 My tokens aren't appearing or are causing YVD to crash when trying to load them. How do I fix this?

  If your tokens are broken (i.e no tokens appear, YVD crashes when trying to load them), you can download the token set and extract to: C:\Program Files\XeroCreative\YVD\Tokens.

• 6.4 Xerocreative announced an update to the banlist. For some reason, YVD still shows the old banlist. What do I do?

  There have been some cases where the banlist gets cached on your computer when YVD accesses it from our servers. All you need to do is clear this cache (in Internet Explorer, usually) to force the banlist to update. Be sure to delete any cookies as well, just in case.

• 6.5 Why can't I see my Life Point count/the number of cards in my deck/the phase bar?

  For the Life Point count and number of cards in your deck, the *.TTF File [a font file] more than likely did not register correctly. To correct this issue follow the following directions and install the LCD-BOLD.TTF in the YVD Directory [the place you installed YVD]: [link]
  The phase bar issue is sometimes caused by either an issue with the installer or because the computer needs to be restarted. Try restarting your computer, and they should appear. If not, you should be able to find a couple files in your YVD folder called lcd-bold. Copy these to C:\WINDOWS\system32\Fonts. You need administrator access for this to work.

• 6.6 I am trying to connect using the Server Dueling, but I keep connecting to myself! What is the problem?

  If you use server dueling, you may end up connecting to yourself. This happens when you don't spell your opponent's server dueling name exactly. Be sure that is correct! Your opponent should also be the opposite of what you are; i.e, if you're hosting, your opponent should be the client.

• 6.7 Server Duels are down! What can I do?

  Refer to Section 4.2 about IP Dueling.

• 6.8 Why can't I view my opponent's graveyard?

  This seems to be a common issue. Unfortunately, the cause of this problem is unknown. It's very likely related to the server dueling feature, but no definite fix is available at this time. Sorry. :(

• 6.9 Why is my YVD all distorted, making it impossible to use?

  Set your DPI to 96. Below are several links that can walk you through this.

• 6.10 Why can't I see the Duel or Chat buttons?

  This is due to one of three things: corrupted YVD install, your resolution is too small, or your DPI is not set to 96. Note that YVD REQUIRES a resolution of 1024x768 or higher. If your resolution is set high enough, check your DPI settings using the instructions in Section 6.9 above. If that fails, reinstall YVD.

• 6.11 What can I do to make YVD work on my Netbook?

  YVD currently requires a minimum screen resolution of 1024x768, and is not resizeable. This has been a problem for users with Netbooks, as a lot of them have a maximum resolution of 1024x600, making it impossible to click the Chat and Duel buttons. We are currently working on a new version of YVD that will eliminate this issue, but until then, we have some workarounds that seem to work for most users, but for some they do not (in which case you'll have to wait for the next version or use a different computer)
  
  First of all, check to make sure your DPI settings are set to 96, as described in Section 6.9.
  Next, try changing your resolution to 1024x768 anyway, as some netbooks will let you do so and will just scroll when you move your mouse in that direction. These links below can walk you through that.

  If you cannot change your resolution higher by default, you can try to force your screen to allow unsupported resolutions, which can either set your screen to scroll as described above, or it will make your screen go black (but will revert in 15 seconds). Please note that this method only works on Windows XP (and possibly older versions, but that's untested). Microsoft removed this functionality in Windows Vista and Windows 7.
  
  To force a screen resolution in Windows XP, follow these steps:
  
  1. Right-click a blank area of your desktop and click Properties (alternatively, you can go into your Control Panel in Classic View and open up Display).
  2. Select the Settings tab at the top.
  3. Click the Advanced button.
  4. Select the Monitor tab at the top.
  5. Uncheck the box stating, "Hide modes that this monitor cannot display."
  6. Click Ok.
  
  At this point, you can now select a screen resolution of 1024x768 or higher to support YVD. If this does not work and your screen just goes black, wait about 15 seconds or so and it should revert to your old resolution.

• 6.12 My native language is not English and my computer is set in a different language. How will this affect YVD?

  YVD can see several assortments of errors and issues when your computer is set to a non-English language. For YVD to work best, it needs to be set at English (United States). The following links will walk you through changing this.

• 6.13 I'm trying to play YVD in OCG Mode, but it won't launch or my cards won't show up! What do I do?

  You didn't follow something in Kaikan's directions properly. Make very sure that between the closing equation of your filepath and the -ocg there is one space. Also, when updating to the OCG set file, be sure to delete the existing set file before copying in the new one.
  
  Example: "C:\Users\Dustin\Documents\YVD_9_1\Yugioh Virtual Desktop 9_1.exe" -ocg
  
  Also, please make sure your "Target" leads to the *.EXE file, not your YVD Directory.
  
  Correct Filepath: "C:\Users\Dustin\Documents\YVD_9_1\Yugioh Virtual Desktop 9_1.exe"
